Lapalala Biodiversity Centre
The Curator House, Lapalala Wilderness School
About this project
An interactive learning and gathering place, rooted in rammed earth, timber and landscape.
The final design brings together a welcoming, interactive and distinctly Lapalala environment that can be used by students, educators, staff, visitors and the wider community. The spaces are organised to support different ways of learning and gathering, from the interactive exhibition and multi-functional presentation space to the casual eating and pause/reflection areas.
The layout creates strong visual and physical connections to the surrounding landscape through the courtyards, open spaces, large openings and purposeful views. Rather than making the building feel like a conventional classroom, I wanted it to feel familiar, relaxed and approachable, while still offering something exciting and different.
The use of rammed earth, timber, concrete, stone and simple architectural forms connects the building back to the existing Lapalala campus. Overall, the design creates a place where people can learn, interact, share experiences, explore biodiversity and spend time in a space that feels connected to its surroundings.
